The Rescue That Saves You: Why Your Throw Bag Isn't Enough

Most rafters carry a throw bag, but the real rescue starts before you flip. Here's how to plan for the swim you hope never happens.

But here's the thing: on a raft, your PFD is just the baseline. The real rescue isn't the vest on your chest—it's the plan you've rehearsed before you ever push off. And most rafters don't have one.

Let's be blunt. You're not a rescue expert. Neither is your guide, probably. The river doesn't care about your confidence. It cares about hydraulics, strainers, and the fact that you can't breathe underwater. So let's walk through a realistic scenario—you're on a Class III run in the New River Gorge, the water is pushy, and things go sideways. This is how the facts play out, step by step.

Step One: Know What You're Up Against

Class III is intermediate. Narrow passages, complex maneuvering, good boat control required (River difficulty scale). Not deadly, but not a joke.
