On moving water, standing up is one of the fastest ways to get your foot trapped between rocks, pin you underwater, and turn a swim into a fatality. We're not being dramatic; foot entrapment is a leading cause of drowning in whitewater (American Whitewater). Should I Stand Up If I Fall Out of the Raft?
No. In any current that's more than knee-deep, keep your feet up and float on your back with your feet downstream. Do not lock your knees. The moment your feet touch bottom, you risk foot entrapment—your foot wedges between rocks, the current pushes you over, and you can't get up. If I'm in a Hydraulic, Should I Try to Swim Out Immediately?
You might have heard that you should swim hard for the bottom or the side to escape a hole. The reality is more nuanced. Do I Need a Helmet on Class III Rapids?

You grab the rope, not the bag. A throw bag holds 50–70 feet of rope, and the bag itself is just a container. If you grab the bag, you might pull it out of the rescuer's hand. Instead, reach for the rope, get a grip, and let the rescuer pull you in. And if you're the rescuer, aim upstream of the swimmer so the rope lands within reach (American Whitewater).
How Do I Signal for Help?
Whistle signals are universal in rafting. Three blasts mean distress—use them if you need help. One blast means “look at me” or “attention please.” The OK signal is patting the top of your head. And a raised arm with a closed fist or a flat palm means “stop.” These signals are used by guides worldwide, and they're taught by the International Rafting Federation. Is a Class IV Rafting Trip Safe for a Beginner?
No. Class IV is advanced.
